Reopening an Ancient Well
The opening of Windy Cross Well In Great Torrington North Devon is a community led project with two objectives. These are ...
First is to get the ancient well under the floor of the pump-house to be functioning and producing drinking water by means of a hand pump.
Second is to have something beautiful to look at instead of the closed, forgotten and sorry looking pump-house we have had for decades.
If we can achieve both or just the second objective then we will have been successful.
To Remove the stones from the entrance to see what lies beyond.
This was done in May 2026.
Assessing the condition of the well under the floor.
This is on going and will take a while.
Once we deem the water to be safe we will install a practial but beautiful hand pump and drain.
We will add hand forged beautiful gates, like it once had.
This will be the case, even if the water from the well is not going to be viable.
